Banbury Men’s 1s – 4 Reading Men’s 2s – 0

Banbury Men’s 1s continued their winning run with their fourth win in a row against 2nd place

Reading. They are now just 1 point behind Reading with 3 games in hand and 9 points behind top of the league, Oxford University, with 2 games in hand.

Banbury started the game with more purpose and aggression and after just 3 minutes George

Brooker surged into the Reading D and won a penalty corner. Josh Nunneley stepped up and

launched one of his trademark drag flicks into the top of the Reading net to give Banbury an early lead. But Reading are no pushover and they came back at Banbury hard winning a penalty corner after 10 minutes which Pete Lamb saved brilliantly on the line deflecting off his stick low to the right.

Banbury then regained the initiative and after 20 minutes Josh Nunneley picked a perfect 40-yard pass to George Godwin who unleashed a vicious strike which the Reading keeper could only parry, and George Brooker dived to make it 2-0 to Banbury with a slap shot off the rebound. Reading then woke up and put the Banbury defence under pressure and with just 7 minutes left before halftime Reading won a penalty corner which keeper, Kit Lamb, saved with a brilliant dive and stick save to his right, keeping the 2 goal advantage to the home side going into the break.

The second half started with Reading pushing hard to get back in the game and winning a series of penalty corners in the first 10 minutes with Richard Hobley saving one off the line with a great chest level clearance. After 15 minutes Banbury were back in business when Josh Nunneley unleashed Tyson Nunneley down the wing finding George Godwin with a fine pass outside the Reading D.

Godwin rounded the defence and found Man of the Match, Jacob Buckner Rowley, on the baseline, who took the ball inside and coolly flicked it across the goal for Godwin to volley high into the net past the keeper to make it 3-0. The final goal came with 10 minutes left when Steve O’Connor found Godwin on the left who executed a delightful aerial pass to Simons. Simons carved through the Reading midfield and found Buckner Rowley on the baseline who rounded the defence and flicked the ball into the Reading net to make it an unassailable 4-0. The game finished with Reading trying to press Banbury but finding no gaps.

Banbury Manager Andy Camp said “This is another great win and an emphatic one over the club

lying second. We weren’t at our best for periods of the game today but when we kept possession

and moved the ball on early we were devastating. We need to keep this discipline and focus if we

are going to challenge for the top. Next week we face a tough away game away against mid table

Bournemouth.”
