Banbury Make it Six and Go Through to the Third Round
Banbury Men’s HC – 6, Barton Men’s HC – 3
Banbury travelled away again for their 2nd round cup tie at Barton HC and made it 6 wins on the trot whilst scoring 6 goals to go through to the 3 rd round of the England Hockey Cup.
Banbury set about this game on the front foot from the start and forced the Barton keeper to make several saves in the first 5 minutes and were soon 1-0 up through a surging run by Tyson Nunneley who sliced through the Barton defence to find George Godwin who deftly flicked to ball into the net. Then 2 minutes later Banbury won a penalty corner and the ever-busy Harry Simons jumped on the Barton keeper’s save from Josh Nunneley’s fierce drag-flick to flick the deflection to make it 2-0 to Banbury after just 9 minutes. But in this end to end attacking first half Barton’s heads did not go down and after an unfortunate deflection off Josh Nunneley’s stick, the ball fell to the Barton centre forward who skilfully lobbed it over keeper Kit Lamb’s head into the goal to make it 2-1 after just 12 minutes. Then the two sides settled down as the two opposing midfielders closed down play more effectively. Then after 22 minutes Banbury’s midfield of Harry Simons, Richard Hobley, Joe Allen and the excellent Sam Chadbourne gained supremacy and a skilful rollout by Joe Allen won a penalty corner which Captain Darsh Theara scored with a great low drag-flick to make it 3-1. Barton wasn’t finished and made it 3-2 just before the break after the man of the match Kit Lamb made a great save off a drag flick from their penalty corner only to see the next pass go to an unmarked forward who scored with a slap shot. Kit Lamb and the Banbury defence had to work particularly hard to maintain the lead for the last 10 minutes of the half with Camp, Pete Lamb and Tyson Nunneley particularly defending well. Banbury went in at halftime ahead but knowing they were in a real contest.
The second half started with Banbury far more tactically aware of Barton’s gameplay and
consequently, they closed their opponents down much more effectively. Tyson Nunneley and Sam Chadbourne were tearing the Barton flanks apart to build attacks and after 12 minutes great work by Nunneley found Godwin in the Barton D yet again. Godwin’s shot was well saved by the Barton Keeper, but Jacob Buckner Rowley was first to the ball to deflect it in to make it 4-2 to Banbury. Banbury’s pressure paid off 4 minutes later when they won a penalty corner, but Josh Nunneley’s vicious drag-flick crashed off the Barton post and off to safety by the side-line. Barton then came at Banbury and Kit Lamb made two great saves to keep Banbury’s 2 goal cushion alive – one a brilliant save to his right from a drag flick and the second where he slid, tackled and cleared the ball in a one on one with the Barton centre forward who had run clear of the Banbury defence. Then with ten minutes left on the clock, Harry Simons made it 5-2 after great work by Chadbourne and Godwin whose slide-rule pass cut out the Barton keeper and Simons was there to slide and slap the ball home. The Midfield of Allen, Chadbourne, Hobley and Simons then closed down Barton and with 5 minutes on the clock, Banbury won another penalty corner. Captain Darsh Theara scored with a rocket of a low drag flick to put the game beyond the battling Barton to make it 6-2. With 3 minutes left on the clock, Barton won a penalty corner which they converted with a deft flick to finish the game 6-3 to Banbury.
Banbury Manager, Andy Camp said “This was a great cup away win and it makes it 6 wins on the trot now in league and cup for this team. We are going into the Christmas break on a high. The lads were outstanding in the second half against a tough opposition, but we maintained our composure and played effective counter-attacking hockey to close the match out. Scoring 6 goals is no mean feat. We now have to wait to see who we face in the 3 rd round match on the 8th January and then we have the first league match away to Winchester on the 15th January.”
