Ladies 1s Vs. Slough Ladies 2s - Saturday 26th November 2022

Banbury Ladies 1s run riot

Banbury HC Ladies 1s - 8, Slough Ladies 2s – 1

Banbury started the game well and had most of the ball and the play, but didn’t really carve out any concrete chances until 6 mins in when they got their first short corner which the Slough goalie saved. Banbury then had a few more chances and were playing with confidence. The midfield and forwards were all combining well and it was surely only a matter of time… 10 mins in Tash Roberts went on a mazy individual run, took the ball round the goalie and it was 1-0 Banbury. It was pretty much all Banbury and Slough were showing us very little. After 15 mins as a result of a lovely pass from Molly McCusker to Tash, who was up-ended in the D, Banbury were awarded a penalty flick which was converted by Tash 2-0 Banbury. 2 mins later Banbury were awarded a short from which Jaz Bixley scored. Despite being second best in just about all things, Slough persevered and made a foray into the Banbury D, earned themselves a short on 21 mins and from that they managed to bundle the ball in 3-1. This didn’t change the pattern of the first half in any way and Banbury continued to attack – down the wings, with Jecca Tetley, Rosie Gowing, Molly McCusker and Libby Haden and through the middle with Tash, Zoe Young, Corin Scott, Jaz Bixly and Vic “Pagey” Coombs. On 24 mins Corin scored through some lovely open play, 4-1. The rest of the half saw Banbury camped in the Slough D, peppering the opposition goal, but somehow the score remained the same.

The 2nd half started in the same vein and our ladies continued to press. Pagey, Zoe and Tash were making things difficult for Slough and after 38 mins, Zoe raced un-opposed into the D and fired a shot home 5-1. A few mins later, Pagey rifled a shot from just inside the D, 6-1 Banbury. For the next 15 mins Banbury were coming forward at will, had a number of short corners and had numerous chances that all just went wide. It took until 10 mins from the end to get a further score though. This came by way of a fantastic long pass from Pagey which found Tash, who made no mistake, taking it round the goalie and putting it away, 7-1. A minute later Pagey found Tash again who was obstructed and earned another penalty flick – but unfortunately she didn’t hit it well and missed scoring her 4th goal. Even the defenders were getting in on the act and our half backs, Alice Offord and Evie Wilkinson were pushing up and providing some lovely passes to the front line. With the very last play of the game Jaz Bixley lifted a lovely ball high into the Slough net giving the goalie no chance. Final score 8-1 to Banbury.

MVP – It was a fantastic team performance, but it was Molly McCusker who received the most votes and won the award from her team mates.

“Slough travelled to Banbury with a very young and inexperienced team and struggled against a

strong Banbury side playing at home. The Banbury ladies were efficient and clinical and took most of their chances and I think this was the teams’ best performance of the season. I’m hoping that we can get a few more points before Christmas which would put Banbury in a very strong position to move higher up the league after the festive break”.
