Ladies 1s Vs. New Forest 1s - Saturday 12th November 2022

Ladies 1s Travel Well

BHC ladies 1s - 2, New Forest Ladies 1s - 2

Banbury Travelled the 115 miles to New Forest with a strong team and despite the last few results going against them, the team were hopeful of a good showing.

The first few minutes saw the ball go to and fro and both teams were soon settling into a good rhythm. New Forest earned themselves a short corner after a couple of minutes and Banbury defended it well. Despite lots of New Forest pressure, Banbury were playing well and passing the ball about nicely. As a result of some lovely wing play by Libby Haden, Banbury earned a couple of shorts, and the second, after 8 mins, saw the ball fired in towards the goal with Tash Roberts expertly deflecting it into the net. This was just the start Banbury needed – one nil Banbury.

For the next 15 mins, Banbury played some really good hockey, passing it around effectively and

moving forward at pace - and with some numbers, but despite this pressure, there was still only 1 goal in it. The fact that Banbury were only 1 up despite having most of the ball probably gave New Forest a boost and they ended the first half on top and attacked the Banbury goal with vigour, but goalkeeper Sammy Bates and her defence kept them at bay.

The 2nd half started with both teams passing and moving well and it went end to end, but after a

couple of minutes, a New Forest attack saw them break into the D and the shot gave Sammy no

chance. It was now 1-1. However, there was no hint of despondency as the next 10 minutes saw

Banbury launch a number of attacks and during this time Tash won a short, which was defended by New Forest, but they did not clear, and Vic “Pagey” Coombes got on the end of it and swept it

beautifully into the net. Unfortunately, this only spurred New Forest on, who appeared to be a

completely different team to last season, and after some very slick passing and movement, they

were soon level once again.

New Forest had their tails up and for the last quarter of the game, Banbury were struggling to cope with wave after wave of New Forest attacks, and the home team were very close to putting the ball into the Banbury net on many occasions, but the heroic defence stood firm and kept them out. In the dying moments, Banbury broke fast up field and had a couple of chances to win the game – if only the ball have landed a bit kinder, but it wasn’t to be. However, with Banbury attacking the New Forest goal, and keeping the ball up that end, this gave the defence some respite and the game finished in a draw; 2-2.

MVP – Libby Haden, with her lovely wing play, was the overwhelming choice of her team mates.

“This was a much, much better showing than last week and to be honest, both teams could have

won this game. It was entertaining and nerve wracking at the same time. I thought the whole

team played well and played together as a team. With a home game next week against Portsmouth, I can see the opportunity of getting back to winning ways and moving up the league”
