2 points lost, or 1 point won; answers on a postcard please

Banbury HC Ladies 1s - 1, Milton Keynes Ladies 1s - 1

The first game of the new year was at a wet and miserable MK. The home team attacked from the whistle and were determined to get off to a quick start and for the first 15 mins, MK were camped in the Banbury D, intent on making their possession and pressure tell. The Banbury ladies were under the cosh and struggled to get the ball up field during this time with MK having several short corners.

However, the Banbury defence stood firm and kept them out. It took until 16 mins before Banbury hit the ball into the MK half – respite at last. This gave the Banbury midfield and front line a chance, and after some good play deep in the MK half, Tash Roberts took the ball into the D and rocketed a shot into the MK net. 1-0 Banbury. MK were stunned! For the next few minutes it was end to end with both teams moving the ball well and having chances, and it took a great diving save from Banbury goalie Sammy Bates to keep MK from equalising. There were some short corners to both sides, but nothing came from them and the half ended 1-0 Banbury.

The second half started well with a Banbury attack, but 2 mins later MK returned the favour and

earned themselves a short corner. This wasn’t cleared and they got another, then another, but Banbury kept them out. After surviving this, Banbury quickly moved the ball up field and after 10

mins of good constant pressure, the Banbury ladies earned themselves a couple of shorts.

Unfortunately, they couldn’t find a way past the MK goalie. Soon after, after some lovely passing

and movement, Tash Roberts rolled a beautiful ball into the path of Jaz Bixley who lined up her shot, but pushed it just wide. A min later Vic Coombs dragged her short corner goal bound, but the MK goalie made a great save to keep it out. 17 mins into the half, Banbury were on the attack again and it was the dynamic duo of Tash Roberts and Jaz Bixley who combined well again – this time it was just wide from Tash Roberts. Unfortunately, a minute after this let off for MK, they broke up field and after some concentrated pressure they managed to force the ball past Sammy Bates and her defence; 1-1. The final 15 mins saw both teams with the ball, and both sides have chances, but neither could score, and the game (in the constant drizzle now) finished as a draw.

MVP – Several players were nominated, but Tash Roberts received the most (5)

“MK pressed Banbury very hard at the beginning and we defended too deep and so let them come at us, but fortunately we kept them out. After that, the game could have gone either way and I think that we had the best chances and should have come away with the win. That said, on the balance of play and possession, MK probably feel that they should won, so perhaps a draw was fair. I hope the team get off to a faster start next week as at times we do seem slow to get going.”
