Ladies 1s vs. Milton Keynes 1s - Saturday 24 September 2022

Hard fought winning start for the Ladies 1s

Banbury HC Ladies 1s - 3, Milton Keynes Ladies 1s - 0

First game of the new season today and as such, we were keen to discover how the team fared

against a strong Milton Keynes side. Banbury lost a few experienced players over the summer but also recruited some new ones, so it was a bit of a learning experience for all.

From the off, it was clear to see that MK were up for it and were attacking Banbury in numbers. They had a number of short corners in quick succession, but Banbury weathered the storm and as the half wore on, were frequently hitting MK on the break. After 20 mins and some lovely movement by Zoe Young and Tash Roberts, the ball found its way to Jecca Tetley who fired it low and true into the bottom corner. The pattern continued with MK attacking at pace and Banbury doing well to keep the ball out. After 24 minutes, Banbury broke upfield towards the MK goal and as a result of some indecision by their defence, Vic Coombs (Pagey) struck the ball home and it was 2-0. MK did have the ball in the Banbury net, but it was deemed illegal and despite facing much pressure, Banbury went into halftime 2-0 to the good.

The second half was real end-to-end stuff and 5 mins in, after a Banbury short, which was not

cleared, MK couldn’t stop Molly McCusker from forcing the ball into the net to make it 3-0. MK did always look dangerous, but Banbury were coping with everything being thrown at them and earned a number of shorts, and were controlling the game. As the clock ran down, it seemed that MK had run out of ideas and Banbury easily saw the game out. Final whistle; Three – nil to Banbury!

MVP – Several players were nominated, but Molly McCusker received the most nominations (5)

“MK came to Banbury with a very strong team today, but our ladies were well drilled and kept

their shape magnificently. When we attacked, we did so effectively and always looked like scoring. This was an excellent start to the season and if all games are like this, then it is going to be a very exciting season”.
