Banbury Get a Wake-Up Call

Banbury HC Mens 1s - 0, Rugby - 4

After 5 preseason games without a loss, Banbury suffered a 0-4 loss to Rugby in the last match before they face their first league game against Winchester next Saturday.

For the first 20 minutes of this fixture, Banbury looked the most likely team to score with the forward line of Will Kellett, Jamie Boardman and Jacob Buckner Rowley coming close in front of the Rugby goal. But it was Rugby who opened their account after Banbury moved the ball out of defence through good work from Pete Lamb and Josh Nunneley, the ball was lost in midfield and Rugby were given a golden opportunity to pass the ball around a stranded Aidan Stark in goal to make it 1-0.

The second half began well for Banbury with George Godwin on the left and George Brooker and Harry Simons in the centre carving a lot of territory for the forwards to feed off but again Banbury missed chances and Rugby scored another cheap goal to go 2-0 up. Banbury could’ve brought it back to 2-2 given their chances and ball possession. But a series of cards against key players in the Banbury team meant most of the half was played with ten men which after twenty minutes left the defence short and 2 more goals were scored by the visiting team.

Manager Andy Camp summed it up: “Unlike the last 4 weeks we lost discipline and focus and paid for it today. We will regroup and ensure that for our first league match at home against Winchester we will not let those negatives back into our play”.
