Match Reports 3/12/16

Ladies 1st Team

1-1 Draw against Teddington 1s Goal Scorers: Tash Nunneley Banbury ladies 1st XI faced a strong Teddington side in a rearranged fixture which was postponed due to frost two weeks ago. With a full fixture list already on at North Oxford Academy the ladies had to play the game at Tudor Hall School. The winner of the match would have climbed to the top of the league for the Christmas break. Banbury started brilliantly, for ten minutes they were all over the away team, with some excellent build up play by Charli Price and Hayley Nunneley, the girls looked dominant in attack. After some good stick work from Tasha Nunneley, the gaps opened in front of the goal but Banbury failed to capitalise on the pressure. With four crosses being missed in front of goal, the team started to get a little frantic, nothing they tried seem to work. Eventually they managed to break through with Sadie Lapper taking the ball skilfully into the circle before passing to Tasha Nunneley to slot in via an unfortunate deflection from a Teddington defender. Banbury went into the break with a one goal lead. Teddington came out hard in the second half and broke down Banbury’s game time and time again, they were quick to intercept, quick on the break and the girls simply could not get their rhythm back. Kristina Bull and Becca Edwards worked tirelessly in defence ably assisted by Sam Humphreys but Teddington were soon rewarded for their perseverance and they scored the elusive goal that they had worked so hard for. Lotty Andrews made some fantastic saves in goal to keep Banbury in the game and was later awarded man of the match for her excellent performance. Banbury worked hard but stopped playing as a team and gave the ball away far to easily, in the end the girls were grateful when the final whistle went and the final score was 1-1. The girls will finish this half of the season in third place, two points behind leaders Basingstoke and one point behind Teddington. It will prove to be an interesting second half of the season. The girls will enjoy a well earned rest now before commencing friendly matches on Saturday 7th January against Leamington.

Ladies 2nd Team

4-1 Loss against Bicester 1s

Ladies 3rd Team

4-2 Win against Wychwood 1s

Goal Scorers: Siobhan Kirwan-Lee (2), Amy Briant, Helen Robey

After a disappointing first loss of the season last week Banbury Ladies 3s were keen to put in a good performance. Banbury started well with much of the play heading their way, eventually being rewarded a short corner. Some marital intuition told Siobhan that against best laid plans she should strategically send her hit out to Helen Robey rather than captain Becky Kirwan-Lee. This snap decision making worked well for Banbury, Helen took a strike towards goal and the ball was deflected off an opposition stick right into the top corner of the net, giving Banbury a 1-0 lead.

The next goal for Banbury came following another short corner. This time the strike by Becky was saved by the goalie only to provide a number of rebound shots by the Banbury attack. Finally, sheer determination prevailed and Amy Briant was able to slot the ball into the goal. Banbury were able to produce another goal before half-time, with Siobhan hitting the back of the net following a well-timed cross in front of the goal by Helen Robey.

As expected, Wychwood came out strong after half-time, managing to get past Banbury’s defence on a break and make the score 3-1. Siobhan’s second goal came shortly after with another cross in front of the goal keeper, this time by Grace King.

Despite determined efforts by Banbury’s defence, including Becky Kirwan-Lee’s almost goal-line save with her knee, Wychwood managed to hit the back of the net once more before full time, making the final score 4-2. A solid performance by the defence throughout resulted in centre back Claire Gardner picking up a well deserved Man of the Match.

Ladies 4th Team

 2-2 Draw against Oxford Fireflies

Ladies 5th Team

5-0 Win against Bicester 5s

Men’s 1st Team

4-1 loss against Oxford Hawks 1s

Goal Scorer: George Brooker

Men’s 2nd Team

6-1 Win against Oxford 2s

Goal Scorers: Adrian Simons (3), Dave Clark (2), Tyson Nunneley

Banbury men’s 2’s looked to get back into their winning ways and maintain their promotion push hosting Oxford 2’s. The match started off evenly with both team catching the other on the break but the game remaining goalless. It was Banbury who drew first blood with a precision pass finding Dave Clark free in the D to slot home comfortably. This gave Banbury confidence and they grew into the game dominating possession and added a couple more goals before the half.

After the Break Banbury threatened to run away with the game but a combination of some excellent goal keeping and some poor finishing meant that Banbury only doubled their tally in the second half. Oxford scored a late consolation goal leaving Banbury 6-1 winners.

This leaves Banbury third in the league, travelling to second placed Amersham next week where a win could see them in a promotion spot for the Christmas break.

Men’s 3rd Team

5-3 win against Windsor 1s

Men’s Piranhas

6-3 loss against Windsor 2s

Goal Scorers: Gary White (2), Harry Heathcote

Banbury faced a very strong Windsor side and gave a good account of themselves but unfortunately came out 2nd best after a good strongly contested game.

The first half was fairly even with both sides playing good hockey with the half finishing 2 goals apiece (Banbury scorers Gary White and Harry Heathcote). Injuries to the Banbury defence early in the second half meant the home side had change formation and Windsor took control pulling away and  scoring 4 more goals with Gary White adding just one the Piranhas total. The final score ending up 3 – 6.
