Men’s 2nd Team
5-3 loss on penalty strokes (2-2 AFT) against East Grinstead 2s (England Hockey Men’s 2nd XI Trophy)
On Sunday Banbury Men’s 2’s hosted Premier Division Outfit East Grinstead’s 2’s in the second round of the Second XI cup. With Banbury looking to put the previous day’s performance behind them, the start of the game did not go to plan with East Grinstead converting a penalty corner with under a minute on the clock. East Grinstead continued to move the ball well and working some goal scoring opportunities but a combination of good defence and poor finishing left the score at 1-0. As Banbury grew into the game, they won a penalty corner with the resulting strike leading to a penalty stroke. Unfortunately, the stroke was not converted with the keeper making a good save. East Grinstead managed to score once more before the half. The second half was a different story although East Grinstead looked the more dominant team they failed to convert and with Jonny Stirrup finishing off a well worked move this brought Banbury back into the game. With the game entering the final stages Banbury manged to draw level, with captain Nick best scoring from a penalty corner. This meant the game would be decided on strokes. Sadly for Banbury it wasn’t to be losing out 5-3 on strokes.
Men’s 1st Team
3-2 loss against London Edwardians 1s
Goal Scorers: Simon Boardman, Kieran Symons
Men’s 2nd Team
7-0 loss against Slough 1s
On Saturday Banbury Men’s 2’s travelled away to Slough in a top of the table clash, with both teams so far unbeaten. The first exchanges were very even with both teams launching meaningful attacks. It was Slough who opened the scoring with a counter attacking move. This pattern of play continued for the rest of the half leaving Slough 3-0 up at the break. Unfortunately, the depleted Banbury team ran out of steam in the Second Half with Slough controlling the game and ending in a 7-0 score line.
Men’s 3rd Team
3-2 loss against Sonning 3s
Goal Scorers: Stuart Armstrong, Noel Britto
6-2 win against South Berkshire 5s
Goal Scorers: Tom Boardman (3), Dave Clarke (3)
A hat-trick for both Tom Boardman and Dave Clarke helped Banbury to a comfortable win against bottom of the table South Berks 5. The first half saw dominant possession by the Piranhas with multiple chances scoring 5 and conceding a lone sloppy goal to go into the break 5 –1 up. The Piranhas did take the foot of the gas and lost their shape in the second half which was a much more even affair with both sides scoring 1 goal each to make the final score 6 –2 to the Piranhas. Next week a mid table clash away at Eastcote.
