Ladies 1st XI

7-1  Win against Buckingham 2’s

This weekend Banbury ladies 1st team faced Buckingham Ladies 2nd team away. Despite the bad weather and Banbury’s poor away record last season, the team managed to produce a strong performance. Banbury started the match with all the right intentions; playing the ball around the pitch and making the ball the ball do the work. The first goal of the match came during a passage of open play with intelligent movement between the forward line and a finish from one of Banbury’s up and coming youngsters, Vicky Warlow; who slotted the ball past the keeper into the Buckingham goal.

As the first half continued Banbury kept working hard but found themselves slipping into some bad habits that led to some frantic passing and unforced errors. However, Banbury remained tight in defence with excellent communication and composure from Becca Edwards at centre back and close marking by the rest of the team. After a scrappy spell of attacking play Banbury managed to win a short corner and went into the second half with a 2-0 lead, after a conversion of the short corner from Lyndsey White.

During the half time talk Banbury discussed the importance of 2-touch hockey and how they would move the ball early. Their aim of making the ball do the work came to fruition as soon as the whistle blew at the start of the second half. Banbury were far more composed, passing the ball into the space and attacking hard. This style of play was extremely successful and led to the next three goals from Tash Nunneley, Nicola Brown and Aveline Cruikshank; who scored three goals in three minutes. Nicola Brown came back with another goal soon after, making the score 6-0.

Buckingham were not giving up and managed to break through Banbury’s defence to score their first goal, bringing the score line to 6-1. Not wanting to leave the match on a negative note, Banbury continued to play quick passes to one another, with Charlie Matthews putting the ball past the keeper before the final whistle. The result finished at 7-1 to Banbury after a well-fought match from both sides. Banbury awarded their teammate Emily Hogg Man of the Match after a fantastic all-round performance.

Banbury ladies hope to come away with a similar win against Epsom who they face next Saturday, away.

5-2 Loss against Marlow 2’s

Goals from Helen Robey and Hailey Mitchell

Ladies 3rd XI

7-0 Win against Sonning 3’s

This week the ladies 3’s faced Sonning. Banbury started off well with a cracking goal from Shiv Kirwan-lee after just 2 minutes. Next following a lot of attacking play it was a goal for Grace King only 1 minute later. Sonning had a couple of breaks in to Banbury’s half, but the defence stayed strong and kept them out of the D. Banbury then turned the ball over and after numerous chances on goal was awarded a short corner. Tiger woods (Shiv Kirwan-Lee) stepped up to inject the ball to her wifey Becky Kirwan-Lee stood at the top of the D, a great first time strike from B Kirwan-Lee and another goal, 3-0. After a long ball played from a free hit by Immi Kirwin to Charlotte Micallef, a run up the field with a pass in the D to King, she drew the keeper out slipping the ball back to Micallef who scored the 4 th goal, that was it for the first half 4-0 up. After the usual inspirational team talk from the Kirwan-Lee’s we were all pumped for another half to score lots more goals. Banbury were out fast from the Sonning push back and straight away started attacking Sonning, not letting the ball out of the Sonning half. Within 5 minutes we had another well worked goal from S Kirwan-Lee slipping the ball past the keeper on the far post after a perfect pass from Kirwin. Next goal from Amy Briant, from potential hatrick avoidance from S Kirwan-Lee, passing the ball back from in front of the goal keeper with a great finish from Briant. Banbury had all the play with only one chance from Sonning to which Banbury coolly left it to go off the back line. The last goal came from another short corner routine, with injection from Micallef to B Kirwan-Lee, slipping the ball to Kirwin, followed by a pass back to B Kirwan-Lee on the P-spot for great volleying strike to score the final 7 th goal. 7-0 final score, a great result ready to face Wycombe next Saturday.

Ladies 4th XI

1-0 Win against Sonning 4’s

Banbury Ladies 4s scored their first league victory of the season when beating Sonning 4s 1 – 0. The vital goal came in the second half when a cross from Katie Atkins was put in the back of the net by Imee Roberts.

Banbury’s midfield led by Miranda Edwards and Rebecca  Perkin controlled much of the game with Brigid Davidson, Anna Webb and Saffie Inskip in defence keeping the ball away from keeper Sammy Bates.

The win lifts the team to 5th place in the division 4 of Trysports league

Ladies 5th XI

3-1 Win against Thame 3’s

This was a reasonably even match that saw Thame coming out on top 3 – 1. Both teams were predominately new players and it was pleasing to see good passing and running on both sides. Thame scored twice in the first half, passing around the D to create scoring opportunities and with young players up front trying to catch Banbury on the break. Despite some good penetrating attacks, Banbury were goal-less at half time , but they found the net in the second half after a surging run from Carla Fickling ended with a great pass to Charlotte White who put the ball in on the far post. Further runs from Carla ended fruitlessly, but Thame had another goal from a similar situation. An excellent debut for Megan Broome, who shared the man of the match votes with both Carla and Amanda Perkin who had another very solid game.

Ladies Development XI

3-1 Loss against Oxford

They were much better at passing to each other !

That said, the girls got better all through the game, the goal came in the second half after a lovely passage of passing play ,scored by Lotty Atkins, and through out Molly McCusker and Phoebe Pinnell battled solidly in defence. It was a first run out for most of the girls and looks promising for the future.

Men’s 1st XI

7-2 Loss against Spencer 1’s

Goals from Richard Foreman and Kyle White

Men’s 2nd XI

A rainy Saturday afternoon saw the return of the Banbury second team to the hockey season.  A strong Banbury side welcomed the newcomers to the MBBO league. A scintillating start to the first half saw the home side take first blood form the penalty spot. This incredible start continued further into the half with a Simon’s family hat trick surprisingly being topped off by skipper Nick Best with his first of the season. Sporting pundits had Banbury as odds on winners by half time.  The second half saw disappointing performances from both sides with the final score ending 5-1 with Jonny Stirrup scoring the fifth.

2-2 Draw against Wallingford 2’s
