Ladies 4 vs Amersham & Chalfont 20th september 2014
Banbury Ladies 4 – 2
Amersham & Chalfont 3s – 4
So after a long summer the dust was brushed of the hockey sticks and Banbury’s ladies came together as part of a double header for the first league game of the season in the shadow of Bloxham’s newly constructed stand (coffee was even provided!).
The team expected a tough encounter as the team they faced had come down from the league above, but this didn’t faze Banbury. Both teams started brightly and it was an end to end game with chances created at both ends – both teams’ defences keeping the other attacks at bay. Both of Banbury’s left and right backs and their counter parts in midfield made great runs down the side of the pitch and played some great passing hockey that cut through the Amersham defence with ease. The pressure paid off and a great strike from Maisie Bird gave Banbury a half time lead.
Both teams pressed on after the break and the pressure finally paid off for Banbury with a good move down the right finished off by Maisie Bird with a great strike from a tight angle. Amersham were fortunate to have two substitutes to Banbury’s none and as the game wore on Banbury’s tired legs struggled to keep Amersham at bay and conceded three unfortunate goals in a 10 minute period. Banbury kept at it, but were unable to find a way through Amersham’s defence and a fourth goal was conceded on the break. The game ended with the points going to Amersham.
Banbury were disappointed to come away with nothing and the view from the partisan crowd at the side was that a draw would have been at least a fairer result. Banbury can take heart though as some great hockey was played and there were lots of positives to take into next week’s game.
