Ladies 2 put up a brave fight against league leaders Marlow
Banbury ladies traveled down to Marlow on a wet and windy morning to face top of the league.
Banbury started off strong, switching the ball around the back with some great strong passes from Zoe Young to our midfield. Marlow managed to slot in a goal against the run of play. However, Banbury quickly re-formed and won a short corner. Carol Hicks smashed the ball to the left post where Charlotte Micallef met the ball and deflected it into the path of Aveline Cruickshank who skillfully put the ball past the keeper.
Banbury continued to play well with some strong passes up the wings from Serena Goodhart and Alice Tollemache. Honours even at half time, Banbury prepared themselves for Marlow to come back strong. The half began with some solid defending from Laura Dee, Amy Morris and Karen Brooker, who distributed the ball well to our midfield and forwards.
Aveline ran the ball down the wing and along the back line of the D, passing the ball across the goal to Beth Camp, who was unfortunately accused of kicking the ball. However, the play continued and Charlotte Micallef picked up the ball and took a shot at the keeper which was saved. Alice ran into the D and picked up the deflection and hit the ball straight past the keeper. However, the umpire then decided to blow up the supposed foot from earlier in the game and disallowed the goal.
Marlow then stepped up their play and managed to win the ball on a counter attack, worked the ball into the D and scored again. Despite some excellent saves from keeper, Lotty Andrews, Marlow managed to quickly score again making the score 1-3 to Marlow.
Sarah Clinkard came on in midfield and made some spectacular diving tackles. Despite Banbury’s noble effort, Marlow managed to score again. Coach Liz Mcvee kept her cool on the side and offered great support.
Banbury look forward to playing on home turf next week.
