Ladies 1 held to a draw by West Hampstead
South Division 3a
Banbury L1 -5 West Hampstead L1 -5
Banbury started strongly with early chances for Sadie Lapper being cleared off the line and Mae Welch hitting the post. Shortly after their persistence was rewarded with great link up play between Victoria Coombs, Natasha Nunneley and Lapper resulting in Banbury getting their first goal.
Within 5 minutes Banbury had extended their lead after Welch hustled the ball from an unsuspected West Hampstead defender. West Hampstead then fought back with a quick free hit catching Banbury’s back line off guard resulting in Erin Smith getting her first of the game for the visitors.
Despite a great save by Banbury’s keeper Amy Cairn’s in a one on one, sloppy defending allowed Smith to get her second of the game.
Banbury were determined to fight back and go in at half time on top and it happened when they were awarded a short corner and Coombs’s shot was bundled over the line by Nunneley.
West Hampstead were the first to score in the second half with Smith completing her hatrick. Banbury were quick to respond and regain the lead as Holly Firkins drove forward before finding Alison Sturla on the baseline who found Lapper in the D who slotted the ball home cooly. Banbury extended their lead to 5-3 with Megan Moran scoring with a fine finish.
Despite being in the driving seat, Banbury failed to finish the game with a win as West Hampstead finished with 2 late goals from Charlotte Adair and Sarah Laird leaving the home team very disappointed and slipping further behind league leaders and local rivals Witney.
