Ladies 1 continue unbeaten run and climb to top of South Division 3a
South Division 3a
Witney L1 – 1 Banbury L1 – 3
It was big game in the race for the title when Banbury Ladies 1st team travelled to league leaders Witney on Saturday. Witney got off to a good start applying lots of pressure, and their hard work paid off when Amy Lewis deflected a shot that gave stand in goalie Shelley Irvine no chance after just 5 minutes. Banbury remained calm and for the next 25 minutes dominated possession with some excellent transferring round the back by the defensive back four Becca Atkins, Julie Gardner, Becca Demzcak and Holly Firkins.Chances were few and far between and at half time this tense game remained with Banbury trailing by one goal.
At the start of the second half Banbury kept the pressure on Witney dominating possession. After some good attacking play Banbury were awarded a penalty corner. Captain Sadie Lapper-Glover made an excellent call on the penalty corner routine which resulted in former Welsh International, Pippa Jones to slot the ball home to put Banbury back on equal terms. Witney did not have many shots in the second half and goalie Amy Cairns was only required to make one save. Banbury continued their dominance in possession and it was not long before their patience paid off with an improvised set piece involving Holly Firkins and Sadie Lapper-Glover with Tasha Nunneley putting the ball past the keeper from close range.
Banbury remained tight defensively throughout all areas of the pitch and despite short periods where they were down to 10 players they maintained their focus. In the sixty eighth minute after some precise building play Becca Demzcak scored a great goal from the right hand side undercutting the ball into the top left corner to secure an emphatic win and to put Banbury at the top of the South League division 3a with 6 games to go.
