Great end to the season for Banbury U14 Boys

Bicester 2 Banbury 3

The Banbury U14’s side this year has comprised of mostly year 7 & 8 boys and a couple of year 9’s, and although a young side who have had some tough and challenging matches this season against much older opposition, have grown in confidence, match play and performances throughout the season.

The boys last match was their annual match away against Bicester and put in a really great performance culminating in 3-2 Victory.  Although the sides were quite evenly matched, the difference was the pass and move hockey that Banbury demonstrated throughout the game, moving the ball around the Bicester defence with some great attacks and goals.

Although Bicester went 1 up early on, their main threat was playing a high line and looking for the break. Once James and Felix realised the threat and stepped up with great defensive play and marking, the Bicester attacks were limited to only a handful of chances , which were snuffed out by our “stand in” Goal Keeper James Marshall who had some great kicks, saves and leaves.   Sam L and Oscar also defended well and supported the midfield with some great interceptions, driving play and creating the foundation for many attacks.

Our midfield showed real maturity they way they passed and moved the ball, opening up the Bicester defence and creating some great changes on many occasions. The midfield also recycled the ball really well and changed the point of attack (something that some of our more senior teams should do more often).

Sam B played the bottom of the diamond pivot role brilliantly distributing the ball left and right allowing Charlie, Jacob and Jamie to drive through with some great one two’s and link up play with Theo upfront to slice open the Bicester defence.

Two great strikes from Charlie and Sam B made it 2 -1 at half time.  Bicester then equalised with a break away goal, but some great play in the last 10 minutes saw Banbury clinch the win after a flowing move from defence to attack with Charlie slapping the ball in at the right post.

The game in truth was a lot closer than it should have been with Banbury creating many chances. There was some great defending, saves and goal line clearances by Bicester who kept the game tight till the end with Banbury glad to walk off the pitch 3 -2 victors. Thanks also go to Bicester who played well with the game competitive and well natured.
