Banbury v Oxford Ladies
Saturday 17th October
Banbury Ladies 1st 3 – Oxford Ladies 3
After a defeat to Wimbledon last week, Banbury were eager to get back to winning ways against local rivals Oxford Ladies.
Unfortunately, Oxford started the strongest taking the lead early on in the first half. Despite this early blip, Banbury kept their heads up and continued to apply attacking pressure, especially down the wings. Banbury were eventually rewarded with a penalty flick which Vic Coombes slotted away with confidence. The first half ended 1-1 with everything left to play for.
Banbury started the second half strong and despite some unfortunate umpiring decisions kept their discipline. Oxford didn’t sit back either and put pressure on the Banbury defence requiring some solid defending by Hayley Nunneley, Holly Johnson, Serena Goodhart and Juliet Gardner. Great movement in Banbury midfield led to a break down the middle of the pitch allowing Natahsa Nunnely and Aveline Cruickshank to pass around the Oxford defence. Natasha took full advantage of the space, putting Banbury in the lead for the first time in the game.
Oxford, however, responded quickly to going behind making it 2-2 within minutes. Banbury were not ready to settle for a draw and pushed again, resulting in a second goal from Natasha Nunneley putting Banbury back in the lead.
Again Oxford responded quickly scoring another goal to make it 3-3 with only minutes of the game left. Banbury though never gave up, winning their 5th short corner of the game. Unfortunately the late efforts were to no avail, with the game ending in a 3-3 draw.
After a hard fought draw, Banbury Ladies 1st X1 look ahead to another tough game against Epsom at home next Saturday.
