Banbury Mens 1 secure vital win in relegation battle

Banbury men picked up their first win since the 15th October with a gripping 2-1win over relegation rivals Milton Keynes with goals from Josh Nunneley and the winner from late call up Craig Irvine. The result was even more impressive as Banbury were without Captain Charlie Murphy as well as Simon West and Tim Craven.

It what was always going to be a tough encounter it was Milton Keynes who started the brighter without creating any clear cut chances but it was Banbury who took the lead from a Nunneley short corner after good work down the right hand side by George Brooker.

This goal shocked Milton Keynes and it was Banbury who dominated the next stage of the game and could have gone further ahead with Brooker missing a good chance and Nunneley having another short corner well saved. At the other end Milton Keynes were limited to one half-chance with veterans Tom Slay and Richard Foreman in impressive form.

The early stages of the second half saw a similar pattern to the game with Banbury playing all the hockey and Milton Keynes tactics getting more and more aggressive. A number of opportunities went a begging and Banbury were delighted that goal keeper Phil Smith made a great save to deny Milton Keynes. With a large crowd getting more and more anxious Tyson Nunneley broke down the right hand side and his pin point cross was deflected into the net on the reverse stick by Irvine with just five minutes left on the clock.

Banbury were denied their first clean sheet of the season when in the final play of the game Milton Keynes won a debatable short corner and a well worked routine left Smith in the Banbury goal with no chance, with the goal coming from Jamie Dodd.

The result lifts Banbury off then bottom of the South Premier A League and they will be targeting another three points on Saturday when they travel to Chichester who they beat earlier in the season to pick up their only other win this season.
