Banbury Ladies 4s make it 2 from 2
Banbury 4 – 2 (Grace King, Clair Condie) Phoenix and Rangelagh 3 – 1
The early morning snow had well cleared by the time this afternoon fixture was underway, but there was still a cold wind blowing round the ground. However, after last week’s good result Banbury were keen to play. Taking this renew optimism they started out playing positively moving the ball around well as Banbury’s young players impressed against an experienced Pheonix. However, Banbury did well to frustrate the gathering crowd as they failed to capitalize on their dominance, with attack after attack fizzling out as they approached the opposition D. It looked to be one of those days when a Banbury 3 on 1 with the keeper went wide and at the other end Phoenix were fortunate to score when a ball shelled into the Banbury D was adjudged to come off an attackers stick. Despite Banbury’s dominance in attack and defense they went into the break 1-0 down.
Banbury as a team have come on well this season-playing some lovely hockey that has yet to get their just reward and with the second half much like the first it looked like they were going to come away with nothing in a game they should have got something. Shots and shorts where going just wide and Phoenix were managing to cut out Banbury final passes. However, Banbury’s grit and determination and continued pressure paid off as Grace King coolly slotted home a rebound off the keeper. 1-1 and game on Banbury continued to press and to the relief of the gathering crowd Claire Condie managed to smuggle home the ball after a run along the base line to make it 2-1.
The win catapults the team up the table and they can look to take this form into next week against Windsor to make it 3 out of 3.
