Banbury Ladies 4s earn hard fought 3 points
Banbury Ladies 4s – 1 Windsor Ladies 2s – 0
Banbury went into this match in search of a third successive league win of the season. The match started well with Banbury on the attack from the off, putting pressure on the Windsor defence after some fine team play. This early pressure paid off after some great play down the wing resulting in Claire Condie pulling the ball back across goal for Cath Page to slot home. This partnership has proved successful this season in creating and scoring a number of goals. Banbury deserved this early lead and pushed for a second goal, forcing the Windsor keeper to make some great saves. Windsor also created some chances in the first half, but their swift counter attacks were dealt with confidently by a youthful Banbury defence which has grown in stature throughout the season.
Banbury knew that Windsor would pile on the pressure in the second half and so it proved as they attacked straight from the whistle. The pressure from Windsor resulted in a number of short corners awarded in their favour, although they were unable to convert from these opportunities. The Banbury defence dealt well with the short corner routines devised by Windsor and were able to make some quick breaks on the counter attack. Once again the Windsor goalkeeper was called into action to keep the score at 1-0, saving well from a great strike from Vicky Warlow.
Banbury held their nerve during this sustained period of Windsor pressure, knowing all three points had been secured when the final whistle sounded just after the awarding of a short corner to Banbury. It was a hard fought, but vital three points, which takes Banbury further away from danger at the bottom of the table. Banbury are finally getting the rewards for great team performances and will be looking to secure another three points against Wycombe next week.
