Banbury Mens 1 secure vital win in relegation battle

Banbury men picked up their first win since the 15th October with a gripping 2-1win over relegation rivals Milton Keynes with goals from Josh Nunneley and the winner from late call up Craig Irvine. The result was even more impressive as Banbury were without Captain Charlie Murphy as well as Simon West and Tim Craven.

It what was always going to be a tough encounter it was Milton Keynes who started the brighter without creating any clear cut chances but it was Banbury who took the lead from a Nunneley short corner after good work down the right hand side by George Brooker.

This goal shocked Milton Keynes and it was Banbury who dominated the next stage of the game and could have gone further ahead with Brooker missing a good chance and Nunneley having another short corner well saved. At the other end Milton Keynes were limited to one half-chance with veterans Tom Slay and Richard Foreman in impressive form.

The early stages of the second half saw a similar pattern to the game with Banbury playing all the hockey and Milton Keynes tactics getting more and more aggressive. A number of opportunities went a begging and Banbury were delighted that goal keeper Phil Smith made a great save to deny Milton Keynes. With a large crowd getting more and more anxious Tyson Nunneley broke down the right hand side and his pin point cross was deflected into the net on the reverse stick by Irvine with just five minutes left on the clock.

Banbury were denied their first clean sheet of the season when in the final play of the game Milton Keynes won a debatable short corner and a well worked routine left Smith in the Banbury goal with no chance, with the goal coming from Jamie Dodd.

The result lifts Banbury off then bottom of the South Premier A League and they will be targeting another three points on Saturday when they travel to Chichester who they beat earlier in the season to pick up their only other win this season.

Banbury 0 – 1 Brighton

After an initial scare the pitch would be frozen, Banbury make the long trip down to Brighton to try and secure a win in their first league game after Chrsitmas. The home meeting saw Banbury draw with Brighton winning one of their four points for the season.

With the Introduction of new Australians Jimmy Dick and Nathan Lawler Banbury begin the game with a rejuvenated attitude. The ball being passed around with pace and confidence, the same could be said for Brighton both teams attempting to set the tone for the second half of their seasons. Banbury were first to create a clear cut chance, Royden Burt unable to convert the goal. Tidy defending from Josh Nunneley and good saves from Banbury keeper Phil Smith kept the score at 0-0 going into half time.

The second half started with Brighton coming out fighting and creating good chances, leaving Banbury feeling stuck and struggling to relieve pressure. After prolonged pressure Brighton opened the scoring in open play. This seemed to have a positive effect on Banbury who resumed creating chances but were unable to convert and value possession. Things took a turn for the worst as the North Oxfordshire side find themselves receiving two yellow cards for Adrian Simons and Nathan Lawler, Banbury were also lucky not to go two goals down after captain, Charlie Murphy, passed the ball to the Brighton centre forward.

Banbury face Milton Keynes at home next week, where a win is crucial to kick start the season and remain in the southern premier league.

Banbury Ladies Development 4 Witney Development 2

On a day when a number of games were cancelled due to frosty pitches a Ladies team ventured to Witney for a late starting match in the Oxon Development league.

The young side settled quickly into their positions and with the guidance and support of 4 adult team members they were soon putting the Witney defence under pressure. A number of shots were blocked before Katie Young pounced onto a rebound from the keeper and slotted home her first goal. The Witney team came back strongly and goalkeeper Louisa Getley had to be on her toes to ensure they didn’t capitalise. She made some crucial saves before the defence left her exposed and Witney managed to score in the bottom right corner. Witney continued to apply pressure and an unfortunate defensive error (by the adult members of the team!!) led to Witney’s second goal.

Banbury were determined to get back on to level terms and with Charlie Price and Katie Atkins linking well down the right side of the pitch there was soon an opportunity for Katie Young to pick up on a cross into the ‘D’ and score her second, bringing the half time score to 2 – 2.

Ollie Gardner provided the umpiring expertise for the match and kept the game flowing well.

The second half of the game was all in Banbury’s favour. Defensive duo of Saffie Inskip and Katherine Gunn made strong tackles denying Witney the chance to attack and providing passes up to our forward line. Maisie Bird, playing at left wing made a number of penetrating runs and connected well with Katie Young in the centre. The third goal came after Young took a solo run through the centre of the pitch giving a final pass to Bird waiting at the left post to slot the ball home. The final goal of the match and Katie’s hat-trick goal came after some slick passing between all team members found Katie at the top of the circle. She took delight in firing the ball in to the back of the net and finalising the score at 4 – 2, a deserved win for a very fine structured team performance.

Team: Katie Atkins, Maisie Bird, Louisa Getley, Katherine Gunn, Saffie Inskip, Charlie Price, Katie Young, Becca Atkins, Penny Demczak, Carol Hicks, Jenny Nunneley

Banbury Piranhas 4 Thame 1

The young Piranha team came back from a top of the table clash away to Thame Men’s 2s with all 3 points – and they deserved it.

In a bruising encounter where the Thame team made it obvious from the start that it was going to be a physical clash the Piranhas withstood a heavy attack for the first ten minutes before settling down. Harry Camp, Sam Pick and Rhys Potter were outstanding in defence and soon the Thame attack ran out of steam and ideas.

The midfield of Chris and Simon Atkins, Ady Lamb and the speedy Luke Frazer then took the initiative and a dominant ten minutes led to the first Piranha goal expertly converted by the prolific Noel Britto.
The Piranhas then turned up the heat and Luke Frazer out ran the Thame defence again and again creating great chances for Christian Squire and Noel Britto in front of goal but it was a deft move by Squire which led to a great strike by Luke Frazer to make it 2-0.

More pressure by Atkins and Frazer on the wings and Britto and Squire up front led to a penalty corner which was struck home by Ady Lamb so the Piranhas went in 3-0 up at half time.
The second half was a tougher challenge with Thame attacking more aggressively but Harry Camp and Sam Pick tackled everything in front of them. Again the Piranhas broke the Thame momentum with a great move down the right through Camp, Potter and Frazer which found Ashley Laverick on the right. Laverick rounded the defence and executed a great shot between the Thame goalie and the post from the tightest of angles making it a decisive 4-0.

Thame to their credit never gave up and were rewarded with a consolation goal. The Piranhas came away with all 3 points from this top of the table clash and now have two weeks off before their next league match.

Banbury Piranhas kick off the New Year with a win

Banbury Hockey Piranhas – 5 Oxford Hockey Club – 2

Banbury Piranhas faced an experienced Oxford HC squad in their first fixture
for 2012 and came out clear winners.

The first half was relatively close with the Piranhas going in at half time 2-1
up after goals from Christian Squire and a delightful reverse stick strike from
Ben Britto. The Oxford goalie kept Britto, Frazer, Allen and Squire at bay most
of the half . Sam pick and Ashley Laverick worked particularly hard in defence
to hold out the Oxford attack.

The second half was a different story with the Piranhas being much more
effective in keeping possession and changing the points of attack. This led to
an early short corner which was deftly struck home by Camp giving the Piranhas a
3-1 lead within the first minute. Oxford fought back to make it 3-2 and Kit Lamb
in goal, and Ady Lam and particularly Sam pick who was outstanding –
had to help the defence weather the storm.
But Potter, Townsend, Frazer,
Gilkes and Atkins in midfield helped to stabilize the team and the Piranha
attacks soon began to hit Oxford hard again. Two more goals from Townsend and
Allen finished the game.

The Piranhas face a tough fixture away to Thame 2s next week who will look for
revenge after the young Piranhas beat them 4-0 at the beginning of the season.
