Mens 1st v Chichester match report

Banbury 3 – 4 Chichester

In the previous league meeting between the two sides Banbury picked up 3 of their 7 points for the season and on the back of a good win against Milton Keynes things were looking positive for the North Oxfordshire side.

The game started with a fast and open feel, both teams creating opportunities and defending well. Chichester opened the scoring with a good run of play ending in a sloppy but affective finish from close range, within minutes Banbury equalised through George Brooker after a lack of concentration from the Chichester Defence. The game continued in the same open fashion and both teams scored 2 more sloppy goals each, with Australian Jimmy Dick grabbing both of Banbury’s. The half time whistle went with the score level.

After words at half time from Charlie Murphy, Tyson Nunneley and coach, Stuart Armstrong Banbury came out of half time fighting. Against the initial run of play Chichester went ahead with another unspectacular goal. This left Banbury under sustained pressure from wave after wave of Chichester attack. Yellow cards for Banbury’s Tyson Nunneley and Josh Nunneley did not help matters; However a solid defence and midfield denied Chichester any more goals. Unfortunately the Banbury attack were unable to convert good chances, chances falling for Steve O’Connor, Royden Burt and Jimmy Dick unable to complete his hat-trick left Banbury losing 4-3.

Banbury ladies 1′s lose out in last 2 minutes of a high scoring thriller

Banbury Ladies 5 Brighton 6

With a side plagued by injuries and missing several key players, Banbury ladies travelled the long distance to Brighton.

With a side of only 12 players, Banbury started out of the blocks the better team, with Tash Nunneley opening the scoring after some perceptive defensive work and outlet play from Jo Hopkins.

After 10 minutes Banbury were unfortunate to lose the in-form Krissy Bull to a high ball which resulted in a broken finger. This left the squad with the bare 11 players, but far from this being a problem Banbury relished the challenge. With some simple but effective passing and movement Banbury dominated the first half.

Ali Sturla linked beautifully with Meg Moran, who was making her impressive first team league debut, together they created many opportunities for our hard working forwards.
In what was a hard fought game with both sides showing equal flair and determination Banbury were up 3-2 at half time, with goals from Sadie Lapper after some inventive open play and Ali Sturla from a well drilled short corner.

In the second half the game continued along the same note with further goals from Tash Nunneley and Sadie Lapper, but unfortunately Brighton were able to equalise as Banbury tired. In the final 2 minutes after some outstanding saves from Susie Pollock, a short corner was conceded which was tipped in to the top of the net. Despite a final push and amazing effort from the whole team they were unable to convert any further chances.

An all round brilliant team performance with excellent coaching from our manager Liz McVey on the sidelines, which will send us into the second half of the season hungry for more goals and undoubtedly wins.

Quiz Night and GRAND DRAW

We are having a quiz night at the club house on Saturday 28th January at 7.30pm.

The GRAND DRAW will take place at 8.45.

Banbury U16 – 0 Oxford Hawks -5

A young Banbury squad took on a more experienced Hawks team and matched them well until the final 10 minutes.

After a very close fought first half the Banbury lads went in at half time vey unlucky to be just 1-0 down. The hard working midfield unit of Kyle White, Oliver Davis, Jonny Stirrup and Chris Atkins created great chances for Christian Squire, Tom Tait and Jo Whinmill up front. Kyle White and Christian Squire came particularly close and Banbury paid dearly for not being able to convert a series of short corners. Alex Hatzegeorgio was outstanding in goal making a series of critical saves, and Harry Camp and Sam Pick held the central defence together well tackling and distributing well to the hard working James Davenport and Ashley Laverick on the flanks.

In the second half Banbury came at Hawks hard and for the first 15 minutes and looked more likely to score with Aiden Edwards, Davis, White and Stirrup putting together some great passing moves. Then Hawks took grip of the game and started to dominate.

Harry Camp, Sam Pick, James Davenport and Ashley Laverick had been outstanding throughout and along with the excellent Alex Hatzegeorgio in goal they had kept the score down to 1-0. In The last 10 minutes however the youngsters tired and lost concentration which resulted on Hawks scoring 4 more goals and taking the match well beyond the Banbury team.

This young team will be stronger next year and will be more than a match for the best in the league. They did give Hawks a great game and theyve learnt some good lessons from it.
