Banbury Piranhas Run A Strengthened Newbury Close
Newbury “4s” (?!) -2 Banbury Piranhas – 1.
Banbury Piranhas were very unlucky to come away with any points at their away match vs a Newbury “4th” team strengthened by a mix of higher team players including a 1st team player. It’s testament to the league position of the team and the talent of the young lads that Newbury felt they had to bolster their team to get a result!!
But it was the Piranhas who totally dominated the first half in spite of the Newbury 1st team player trying to dominate the central midfield. Harry Camp, Sam Pick and Ashley Laverick in defence snuffed out any Newbury attack. In fact the Piranhas had Newbury rocking after just 5 minutes when a well worked move between Squire and Frazer led to a deft strike from Noel Britto to put the Piranhas into the lead. The young team should have had at least three more goals before half time with Frazer, Britto, Squire, and Simon Atkins all coming close. Chris Atkins and Luke Frazer were outstanding on the wings and Newbury just couldn’t cope with them. Young Ben Britto and Jamie Cusak worked their socks off against players twice their age (they’re only 13!!). So good was the Banbury Piranha midfield and defence that Newbury only managed one paltry attack and short corner in the first half which young Kit Lamb in goal saved with a great right pad deflection. The young Piranhas went in at half time with a well deserved 1-0 lead.
The second half saw Newbury take off a couple of their 4th team players and supplement them to drive for a result. This put the midfield of Adrian Lamb, Simon and Chris Atkins and James Davenport under pressure but they coped very well for the first half. As Newbury sent on more experienced substitutes though the Banbury defence came under more pressure but heroic tackling by Camp, Pick, Laverick and Chris Atkins kept them at bay. Two solitary forays by the Newbury 1st team player led to their two goals which were deftly struck past young Kit Lamb in goal leaving him no chance to save. The Piranhas didn’t give up to their credit but they couldn’t convert the short corners they won. Newbury didn’t manage any short corners due to the intelligent marking and interceptions of the Piranha defence. A tough fixture which the young team will relish when Newbury have to come to Fort Drayton in the New Year!
Mens 1 vs Richmond – Match Report
Banbury 3 – 6 Richmond
After a 7 match losing streak Banbury head to top of the league side Richmond to try and kick-start their season with 3 well needed points.
The match began with Banbury pressing high and putting pressure on the Richmond defence, this worked well and Banbury were winning the ball in dangerous areas. Against the run of play Richmond scored a well worked goal piercing the Banbury defence. It was Banbury who were next on the score sheet scoring a well-practiced short corner through Tyson Nunneley. This rejuvenation of energy got Banbury back into the game; a moment of uncharacteristic madness from Steve O’Connor saw him pass the ball to the Richmond centre forward who clinically finished the ball. Richmond were able to score two more goals before half time making it 4-1 at the whistle.
This is a familiar position for Banbury to be in at half time, feeling a couple of silly mistakes cost them important goals. Richmond scored two more goals, Banbury feeling they had nothing to lose came alive and dominated the game for the last twenty minutes. Scoring through George Brooker and Simon Boardman, furthermore Adrian Simons had a penalty saved which would have seen Banbury back into the game. Coach, Stuart Armstrong felt there were many positives to be taken into the second half of the season with Banbury also receiving two Australian players which will help to turn around their season.
